Because we teach both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Karate / Taekwondo under one roof in Matawan, we get asked weekly which one a new student should choose. The honest answer: they solve different problems, and neither is 'better'.
Karate / Taekwondo is a striking art. You learn punches, kicks, blocks, forms (kata) and supervised sparring, wrapped in the customs and discipline of traditional karate. Classes follow a clear structure — warm-up, flexibility, curriculum work, then sparring or kata — and rank is earned through quarterly testing. Students who love clear milestones and stand-up movement tend to thrive here.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling art. Instead of striking, you learn to control an opponent on the ground using technique, leverage and pressure — which is why it is famous for letting a smaller person neutralize a bigger, stronger one. Classes revolve around partner drills and live rolling. Students who enjoy problem-solving and close-contact training usually fall in love with it fast.
If you want self-defense that works standing up, structure, and traditional values, start with Karate / Taekwondo. If you want to learn what to do when a confrontation goes to the ground, start with BJJ. Many of our students eventually train both — they complement each other remarkably well.
