What Is a Kata, and Why Do We Still Practice It?

Karate

Watch a karate class and you will eventually see students moving through a formal solo sequence — a kata. To outsiders it looks like choreography. To karateka, it is a library.

A kata is a prearranged sequence of blocks, strikes, stances and turns that encodes real fighting applications. Each movement has bunkai — practical interpretations against an opponent. The kata preserves techniques and principles exactly as they were passed down, which is how a curriculum can stay proven for more than half a century.

Kata also trains things sparring cannot. Perfection of detail: the exact angle of a block, the exact depth of a stance. Breath control and focus under the pressure of performing alone in front of instructors. And for students preparing for quarterly testing, kata is where discipline shows — there is nowhere to hide.

In our classes, kata shares time with supervised sparring, and sometimes an entire class is dedicated to it. Students usually arrive skeptical and end up considering their kata performance a point of pride.
