What Makes a Great Martial Arts Instructor?

Karate · Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

A high rank proves someone can do martial arts. It does not prove they can teach it. After decades of running a school, here is what we believe separates great instructors from merely skilled ones.

Great instructors see every student. In a class of twenty, they notice the quiet kid in the back whose stance is slightly off — and fix it kindly. They adjust how they teach to who they are teaching: a five-year-old, a teenager and a 50-year-old beginner need the same technique delivered three different ways.

They also hold standards without breaking spirits. Pushing a student to meet the standard of their next rank, while keeping the room a place they love to be, is a balance that takes years to learn. And great instructors keep training themselves — our teaching roster, from our 9th Dan karate master to our world-class BJJ professors, are students of the art first.

When you visit any school, watch the instructor more than the students. You will know within one class.
